Citizenship Resumption

Citizenship resumption is the process that allows former Canadian citizens to regain their Canadian citizenship if they previously lost or renounced it. This pathway is available only to individuals who were once citizens of Canada and wish to restore their status under the current provisions of the Citizenship Act.

Who Can Apply for Citizenship Resumption?

You may be eligible to resume Canadian citizenship if:

  • You were previously a Canadian citizen.
  • You voluntarily renounced your Canadian citizenship, or your citizenship was revoked under earlier legislation.
  • You are now a permanent resident of Canada.
  • You meet the current requirements of the Citizenship Act.

Individuals whose citizenship was revoked for reasons related to fraud or misrepresentation must resolve all underlying issues before they may be eligible to apply for resumption.

  • Not be under a removal order or subject to immigration enforcement.
  • Not be prohibited from obtaining citizenship due to criminality or security concerns.
  • Meet language and knowledge requirements (if between 18 and 54 years old).
