Electronic Travel Authorization

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — Canada 2025 Overview

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an online travel permit required for many foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air, especially those from visa-exempt countries.

What is an eTA?

  • It is electronically linked to your passport.
  • Valid for up to 5 years or until passport expiry — whichever comes first.
  • Allows multiple visits by air, usually up to 6 months per visit, under short-stay rules.

Who Needs an eTA?

  • Citizens of visa-exempt countries travelling to or transiting through Canada by air.

Do not need an eTA:
— Travellers entering by land, sea, train or bus
— Canadian permanent residents returning with PR card or travel document
— U.S. citizens travelling to Canada

How to Apply

  • Apply online on the official immigration website before booking your flight.
  • Need a valid passport, email address, and a credit/debit card for the $7 CAD fee.
  • Form must be completed in one sitting (cannot save midway).
  • Most applicants receive approval within minutes.

Important to Know

  • Even with a valid eTA, entry is not guaranteed — Canada border officers have final say.
  • eTA applies only for air travel; for land/sea/rail entry, other documents may be required.
  • Ensure your passport is valid and matches the passport used in eTA application. If you get a new passport, re-apply for eTA.
