Visitor Visa / eTA

Canada welcomes more than 35 million temporary residents each year. Except for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, all other individuals require permission to enter Canada as a visitor, either through a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), unless they are U.S. Citizens.

Who Needs a TRV or an eTA?

The following individuals require either a TRV or an eTA:

  • Tourists
  • Temporary foreign workers (work permit holders)
  • International students (study permit holders)
  • Business Visitors

TRV or eTA? You Only Need One

Citizens of visa-exempt countries traveling to Canada by air require an eTA before boarding their flight.

Exception: U.S. Citizens do not require a TRV or an eTA. However, U.S. Green Card holders require an eTA regardless of nationality.

If you are not from a visa-exempt country, you must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

What is an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)?

Since March 15, 2016, travelers with passports from visa-exempt countries entering Canada by air require an eTA.

The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for five years or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.

What is a TRV and How to Apply?

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is issued by a Canadian Visa Office outside Canada and shows that the applicant has met the requirements to enter Canada as a visitor. TRVs may be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry visas.

Tourists are typically admitted for up to 6 months, while workers and students may be admitted for the duration of their authorized stay. Extensions are possible from within Canada.

IMPORTANT: Having a TRV does not guarantee entry into Canada. Border Officers must be satisfied that your visit is temporary and that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Important Notes

  • Certain applicants must undergo a medical examination.
  • Criminality or medical issues may prevent entry.
  • Visitors must demonstrate financial ability to support themselves during their stay.
  • Some applicants must submit biometric information.

Country Checklist: TRV or eTA
